Spring in Squamish is a beautiful - and busy - time for homeowners. After months of heavy rain and cooler temperatures, your lawn and garden are ready to wake up. Here's how to give them the best possible start to the growing season.

1. Start with a Spring Cleanup

Remove dead plant material, fallen branches, and leaf debris that built up over winter. This improves air circulation, reduces disease pressure, and lets new growth emerge unobstructed. Pay special attention to garden beds where debris can harbour slugs and fungi - both common in our wet climate.

2. Aerate and Overseed Your Lawn

Our heavy winter rains can compact Squamish soils significantly. Spring aeration relieves compaction, improves drainage, and allows fertilizer and water to reach grass roots more effectively. Follow up with overseeding to fill in thin or bare patches and thicken your lawn for summer.

3. Fertilize with a Slow-Release Formula

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once daytime temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius. This fuels steady, healthy growth through the season without causing a surge of soft, weak growth that fast-release products can trigger.

4. Check Your Irrigation System

Before summer heat arrives, test your irrigation system for leaks, clogged heads, and proper coverage. Adjust timer schedules for the drier summer months ahead. A well-maintained irrigation system can save thousands of litres of water and keep your landscape healthy all season.

5. Prune and Shape Shrubs

Early spring - before new growth flushes out - is the ideal time to prune most shrubs. Remove dead, crossing, or weak branches and shape the plant for the season ahead. Hold off on pruning spring-blooming shrubs like forsythia and rhododendrons until after they flower.
